What is the Amazing Afternoons Program?
Amazing Afternoons offers kids a safe, fun and nurturing after-school experience. Though the kids who participate in the program live just a few miles away from you, their community is challenged by poverty and disadvantage. Four out of five kids at Mount Vernon's Edward Williams Elementary School live in poverty. A significant number of their families are homeless. Amazing Afternoons currently helps 125 first to fifth grade students.
The kids start their “Amazing Afternoon” with a nutritious snack. Then they break into small groups for homework help and reading support. After that, they move to scheduled gym activities or other fun things, including arts and crafts, visual and graphic arts, dance, games, puzzles, computer games, story-telling and writing. Fridays are reserved for special activities such as sports clinics, arts workshops, performing arts, trips and special group projects such as a talent show, newspaper clubs, and community service activities.
Amazing Afternoons gives these kids many of the things you probably take for granted: healthy food to eat...a safe place to learn, make friends, and have fun...and the confidence and leadership skills needed to be successful grown ups!
